Keep
Your Companion Animal from Becoming One of the 2 Million Dogs and Cats
Stolen Each Year!
*
Never leave your dog or cat in your car or tied outside a building while
you run inside for "just a minute."
*
Do not let your cat or dog roam. Spaying and neutering help keep them
happy at home, but you still must supervise them responsibly.
*
Keep all gates padlocked, and if at all possible, do not allow your animals
unsupervised outside access.
*
Never give your dog or cat away "free to good home." This is
the easiest way for people involved in dog fighting and selling animals
into research to attain animals. Always carefully screen any new home
or potential adopter. Make periodic visits, charge an adoption fee and
require a contract (see snips "Minimum
Standards of Care") stating the conditions that must be maintained
for the animal's care.
*
License, collar, and tattoo/microchip each of your animals and keep up-to-date
ID tags on their collars.
*
Keep current photographs and written descriptions of each of your animals.
*
Be aware of strangers or unusual activity in your area. Often strange
vans or trucks are seen in areas where animal thieves are active.
*
Keep animals confined when service or repair people are working around
your home to eliminate the risk of the animals getting out unnoticed.
