For your holiday food shopping, look for companies which have received the "Certified Humane Raised and Handled" label, given by the Humane Farm Animal Care organization. HFA is a non-profit group based in Virgina. Visit their website at: www.certifiedhumane.com.

Forego the traditional turkey dinner and make a Tofurky the centerpiece of your holiday dinner.

Check out PETA's amazing recipes and cookbooks for vegetarian and vegan ideas to replace those boring old main and side dishes of Christmas past.

A Humane Holiday

Adopt an Animal Companion
Home 4 the Holidays ~ This adoption event was started in 1999 by Helen Woodward Animal Center President Michael Arms. Arms coordinated the adoption event among 14 San Diego area shelters, ignoring the old stigma against adopting animals during the holiday season. In that first year 2,563 dogs and cats found new guardians, and the event has spread to many other states since then. The annual Home 4 the Holidays events have become one of the most successful adoption programs in history. Check with your local shelter to find out more, or visit the HWAC Home 4 the Holidays site.

Spread the Word About Fur (Leather, too...)
Remember that purchasing even fur trimmed clothing encourages animal suffering for purely selfish and vain reasons. Wear fabulous fakes, and let the world know that you "Fake It!" Several companies sell T shirts and bumper stickers that tell others to wear "their own skin." Wear a shirt or put a bumper sticker on your car and give people something to think about!

Shop the Animal Welfare, Rescue and Rights Groups' Catalogues
Give your gift giving a theme this year! Support the efforts of the ASPCA, HSUS, PETA and other groups selling animal related merchandise, and give everyone one your list something that makes the world a better place for animals.

Check Out Partnerships
Amazon.com and other large Internet retailers have established partnerships with many rescue groups that allow the groups to take a percentage of sales made through their webpages. Make sure to place your order through your favorite rescue!
